The Transportation portion of the PE Exam is relatively simple and easy to study for. Truly the only material you are studying is six subject areas for the Transportation portion which are the following. There will be 8 question on the morning portion.
1. Horizontal Curves (1-2 questions)
2. Vertical Curves (1question)
3. Sight distance(1-2questions)
4. Superelevation(1question)
5. Vertical and/or horizontal clearances(1 question)
6. Acceleration and deceleration(1-2questions)
Here are some good Transportation Civil PE AM review notes.
Since there are only six areas you know you are going to get at least one question on each area, so you better know them. The best way to study for this section is to go to http://engineeringregistration.tamu.edu/tapedreviews/Transportation/index.htm. Print out the .pdf file and listen to the 3 hrs and 43 minutes of video. Don’t just watch the video straight through. When they get to example problems, stop the recording and make sure you understand the concept and solve the problem.
Don’t rush through the video, I recommend 12 hours of studying time for the transportation section and so that is 4 hours of watching the video, 1 hour of reviewing the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices 2009 Edition – Part 6, and then 7 hours of solving problems.
On pages 14-18 in the pdf file for “Transportation Civil PE AM review notes”, are there formulas or are they blank pages? Thank you so much.
Diane, Those are just blank pages, probably intended for you to write in the formulas if you wanted.
i commend you for this site, you are a good man!
I downloaded the Transportation Civil PE AM review notes and when I go to print them out, it only orints out the first few pages. is there something worng with the file? Thanks for all the other info it is very helpful.
That is the first I heard of this problem. I don’t know what is wrong with it.
Thank you
I am having lots of trouble downloading the videos. My installed software does not recognize an RM type file. Can you help? Thanks!
Ralph, You are going to have to download real player to watch those videos. It is definitely worth your time to watch them. Are you studying for the Transportation depth section or the Construction section? When are you taking the PE Exam? Let me know if you have any other questions/conc.
This is confusing. I assume since this website is for the Construction PM module, this Transpo section is for the Transpo AM topics only (as confirmed by the 6 subject topics listed above). Why then are you suggesting the Transpo PM NCEES sample problems? Why recommend studying the MUTCD (there are no questions from the MUTCD on the AM exam)? Additionally, the videos you refer to make reference to outdated codes and cover PM topics (in addition to AM topics).
Josh, Thanks for the comment. Yes, you are right these topics are just for the AM portion. I am recommending you get the Transpo NCEES sample problems in order to use the AM sample questions in there to study. You do have to be careful not to study the PM parts though. About the MUTCD, I am recommending that for three reasons. One is that NCEES says it is a mandatory reference for the Construction – Civil Exam, and I believe it is better to have the manual and not need it, opposed to need it and not have it. The second reason is that I took the test, and I did use it once or twice, I forget if it was in the AM or PM. But I had to use it to look up at least one answer, of course I can’t tell you what part. The third reason is that it is a free download. About the videos, yes some of the stuff is outdated and not related to the AM portion but it does have good info on all the topics that you need, so I am 100% sure it is worth your time to listen. Just skip over the topics not related to 1. Horizontal curves, 2. Vertical curves, 3. Sight distance, 4. Superelevation, 5. Vertical and/or horizontal clearances, 6. Acceleration and deceleration. Very good questions though, I will review some of the stuff that I am recommending here and provide better intel in the future.
Thanks again, Mark
Thank you SO much! I’m taking a test tomorrow and you have NO idea how much this is helping me. I got up to forty on my own and my brain quit on me. Thanks again!
